Lake Hartwell is one of the largest lakes in the Southeast. It has over 56,000 acres and 962 miles of shoreline. Lake Hartwell is controlled by the US Army Corps of Engineers. The lake is divided into three main sections: the Tugaloo River, the Seneca River, and the Savannah River, which is the confluence of the Tugaloo and Seneca. The Savannah River (lower lake) section of the lake is characterized by long views, open water and short coves. The open water is ideal for sailing, skiing, and island exploration. The Tugaloo and Seneca river sections (upper lake) generally have long coves and tributaries, providing a peaceful and tranquil setting.
